Does switchgrass come to mind when thinking about filling up the family car? This new app, developed for Creative Discovery Museum, teaches strategies for wise energy use, inviting people to consider various fuel options, including biofuels, and experience the outcomes/impacts as they undertake a journey by car across the US. Road Trip Challenge is also being used in interactive kiosks in museums and other educational venues.
A content outline and script was already in place when I came on board, but I created original content, graphics, animations and video on:
- biofuels
- microbes
- carbohydrates
- soil science/land management
- switchgrass
- renewable energy
- hybrid cars
- electric cars
- fossil fuels (oil)
- ethanol
- how plants get energy
- photosynthesis
- the carbon cycle
- hydropower

Brad Larson Media contracted me to do video content, graphics, animation and production for the legs of the journey. The museum and its science partners were pleased with my work and I’ve now been asked to develop the four remaining legs of this journey as well as manage project development.
The Road Trip Challenge (RTC) app is currently available for use on Apple iPad’s, but additional platforms for the app will become available during 2016. Download the free iPad-app at the Apple App Store today. See teacher and student resources for the app here.
